FAQ

What encryption types are supported?

Apparatus supports all standard PDF encryption: AES-256 (PDF 2.0, Revision 5 and 6), AES-128 (Revision 4), and legacy RC4 encryption (Revisions 2 and 3). This covers virtually every encrypted PDF you'll encounter, from modern documents to older files created with early versions of Acrobat.

Is it safe to decrypt PDFs in my browser?

Yes. Your files and passwords never leave your device. Decryption runs entirely in your browser using native Web Crypto APIs for AES and SHA operations - no server ever sees your documents or credentials.

Do I need to know the password?

Yes. This tool requires the document password (user or owner) to decrypt the file. It does not crack, guess, or bypass passwords - it performs legitimate decryption using the password you provide.

What is the difference between user and owner passwords?

The user password (or open password) is required to view the PDF. The owner password (or permissions password) controls what actions are allowed - printing, copying, modifying, etc. This tool accepts either one. If you have the owner password, it can derive the encryption key and unlock the file.

Will the unlocked PDF look the same?

Yes. Decryption restores the original content exactly. Text, images, fonts, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, and all other PDF features are fully preserved. The only change is the removal of the encryption layer and password requirement.

Can I unlock multiple PDFs at once?

Yes. Add as many encrypted PDF files as you like. They will all be decrypted with the same password and can be downloaded individually or as a ZIP archive.
